The new location at 1132 Alberni will be Din Tai Fung’s first Canadian location.
It was expected to open late last year, but has been delayed to sometime in 2025. A spokesman said there is no confirmed opening date yet, but the restaurant is gearing up with a slew of positions.
It’ll be adding 300 jobs to the city’s hospitality industry, with positions ranging from cooks and dumpling chefs to servers and managers.
The company boasts of wages in the top 25 per cent of the industry with benefits and on the job-training programs.
Vancouver’s Din Tai Fung will be located in a mixed-use building shared with Carmana Hotel & Suites across from grocery store Urban Fare. Neighbours include soon-to-open South Korean bakery chain Paris Baguette, Michelin-guide recommended Archer, longtime Chinese restaurant Kirin and several fast food restaurants.
In 2023, the City of Vancouver approved a development permit to install a covered patio on the second floor of the building.
The global chain started humbly in Taiwan in 1958 as a mom-and-pop cooking oil store. After about a dozen years, half the store was dedicated to making and selling its xiao long bao, or soup dumplings. Soon, owners Bing-Yi Yang and wife Pen-Mei Lai began phasing out the cooking oil business, turning it into a full-fledged restaurant.
Din Tai Fung has since grown to more than 165 locations in 13 countries around the world. Its Hong Kong location has been awarded several Michelin stars.
