presenter Ben Hillman has admitted he finds it “quite hard” to return to a property from the show in which he had seen loads of potential only to realise nothing has been done to it.
As an interior designer he immediately has ideas when he walks into a room. However he says he tries not to get into that element of things with the buyers on the show.
“I don’t get too involved in that side of things, not for clients on the show. But I certainly have a few ideas that way whilst we’re there.
“And I have been back with doing the revisits now [for A Place In the Sun: Revisited] as well and it’s nice to see what people have done with their homes and and to see whether or whether or not they have taken on board any of my suggestions.
“You always see always see things from your [own] perspective,” he said. “But it’s quite hard to walk back into a property that was full of opportunity and nothing, literally, has been done. You, just think it’s just a wasted opportunity.”

“But usually, the properties that I tend to remember are the ones where they’ve done a fantastic job. Those are the ones that really stand out in my mind, and there’s been a few of those, which would be really great to see, and the passion that has gone into some of these places that the house hunters have turned around.”
Ben confesses he likes to “push boundaries”, which could explain why his ideas aren’t always implemented.
He continued: “The thing is when you’re a designer, and what you do as a designer, you do like to push the boundaries a little bit of what you can do you can do with a place.
“I think most people like stay in their comfort zone when it comes to property, because they have to spend lots of money.

Ben Hillman admits he “pushes the boundaries” as a designer
“People fear just getting it wrong and then having spent thousands of pounds on something that they feel like they might have to put back another way. So generally speaking, people like to play it safe, whereas I like to play it unsafe,” he said.
Ben is practising what he preaches as he is currently in the middle of a huge extension build on his own home.
“I’ve been playing around with this building, this extension, for a couple of years now because I’ve been dragging my heels with it – just because work has been so busy, and getting everything in place and whatnot.
But it is finally kicking off this month. We’re hitting the ground running, and so it’s all going to be happening. I’ve been tweaking and tweaking it for two years and coming up with different sort of concepts and ideas,” he revealed.
New episodes of A Place In The Sun are on Channel 4 weekdays at 6pm.
