Cleaning the oven door can be one of the most frustrating chores as greasy stains can become burned into the surface, but you can get it sparkling again using just one item.

Although white vinegar and baking soda are popular natural products, they are not the best to an oven with as they are not strong enough to break down grease .

Instead, Catherine Wrench, an eco-cleaning expert from , has shared that washing soda (also known as soda crystals) is a highly effective yet natural way to remove grime from an .

Catherine said: “The beauty of using washing soda to clean your oven is that no noxious chemicals are released in the process.

“This makes it a much healthier option than commercial oven cleaners, particularly if you suffer from allergies or respiratory complaints, or have young children in the vicinity.”

Washing soda is highly alkaline, which means it can break down and dissolve acidic stains such as fat, oil, burned food particles as well as grease.

It will soften baked-on grime so you do not have to spend ages scrubbing at your oven door to get rid of the dirt.

Baking soda is slightly alkaline which means it could work to break down stains but may take a lot of elbow grease, but when mixed with white vinegar it will not work since it is an acidic product.

Washing soda is not only natural and fantastic at removing tough stains but it is also cheap too, costing just £2 at ASDA.

How to clean your oven door with washing soda

All you need to do is take an empty spray bottle, then fill it with one tablespoon of washing soda and 500ml of warm water.

Screw the lid on the spray bottle and give it a good shake to make sure the washing soda crystals dissolve.

Then use the spray as you would a typical surface cleaner. Spray a generous amount on your oven door and then wipe with a clean cloth.

For tough stains, sprinkle the soda crystals directly onto the oven and scrub it using a sponge, then the marks should come away easily.

Catherine said: “The abrasive nature of the soda crystals should make light work of the stain removal process. Don’t use metal or harsh scourers as they can scratch your hob. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.”
