GORDON Brown’s former spin doctor has been appointed to a £150,000 role leading Labour’s “reset” with the .

Michael Ellam, who was Downing Street director of communications when Mr Brown was Prime Minister, will become Sir ’s top adviser on Europe after being appointed Second Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office.

Mr Ellam will lead a team of 100 people dealing with UK-EU trade, border controls and security co-operation.

A job advert for the role said the salary is between £153,000 and £200,000 and responsibilities include “delivering the ‘EU reset’ and on international economic issues.”

The former Treasury official was Gordon Brown’s communications chief from 2006 to 2009. He later joined HSBC, where he became chairman of public sector banking.

Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “Michael’s experience at the highest levels of international finance will be a huge asset as we work to deliver economic growth on behalf of the British people, including through resetting our relationship with the EU.”
