With a blast currently sweeping the UK, garden parties and sunshine probably seem a very long way away.

However if you want your garden to be up to the task of hosting people this summer when it arrives, you need to put the work in now.

Over the winter, consistent rainfall can cause weeds and moss to grow in between the stones of your patio and driveway creating a slippery surface or disrupting the stones and making them uneven.

Taking care of the paving stones and patio outside your home is a that, if maintained, could save you thousands in repair bills.

Simon Wardle, owner of patio supplies said: “Keeping on top of the maintenance of your paving is key to preventing any irreversible damage creeping in with the colder weather.

“By using one simple supermarket ingredient, you could save you £1000s in unnecessary paving replacements and even prevent any accidents from mossy paving slabs.”

By mixing supermarket dish soap and boiling water you can save yourself a whole lot of hassle. Pour the mixture between the stones on your patio and driveway and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen moss and dirt between the pavers.

Once the grime has been lifted, use a hard-bristled outdoor brush and scrub the pavers to remove the debris.

From here, it’s just a question of keeping up to date with the maintenance. Make sure you regularly sweep the area to stop fallen leaves making it slippery and moss degrading the pavement.

It’s also a good idea to occasionally reseal the pavement.

Maintaining the sealant on your paving slabs is essential to prevent any moss or mould from entering them and causing damage that cannot be undone.

This should typically be done every three years but depending on the weather it may need to be more frequently for protection.
