Bencic makes statement with comeback win

Tokyo Olympic champion Belinda Bencic recently returned from a pregnancy break after welcoming her first child in 2024.

And the former world No. 10 has already made a statement in her first Grand Slam appearance since 2023, upsetting 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko saved some match points towards the end of the second set but Bencic proved too strong, taking it in a tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6(6).

Tsitsipas falls victim to upset

Day two saw the first major upset as 11th seed and former finalist crashed out in the first round.

The Greek star had a tough draw, coming up against world No. 42 Alex Michelsen, who previously beat him in Tokyo last year.

Michelsen proved too tough for Tsitsipas again, earning a 7-5 6-3 2-6 6-4 victory.

Tsitsipas later said: “The most frustrating part of losing in the first round of a Grand Slam is that you have too much time to recover, and I would prefer it to be the other way around, not having enough time to recover.

“Frankly, that is much better in terms of problem-solving. What bothers me is that I’ll be around here, wandering, for quite a while before my next tournament arrives.”

Brit bursts in tears

Jodie Burrage was left in tears after scoring her first-ever main draw win at the .

The Brit spent six months sidelined by wrist and ankle injuries last year, and used her protected ranking to enter the first Grand Slam tournament of 2025.

During her injury layoff, the thought of playing the big events kept Burrage going. And it all paid off on Monday as she downed Leolia Jeanjean 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round.

Burrage immediately became emotional, bursting into tears after match point.

She later said: “Everything I did, all I was saying is, ‘I want to get to Australia, I know I’ll be good in Australia’.

“So I didn’t really want to let the opportunity go to waste today. I’m very happy that I managed to get over the line. I think I handled myself well throughout the match.

“Just at the end, it was always going to come out at some point. I’m just very, very happy. It was definitely up there with one of the best wins of my career.”

She now faces in a blockbuster second-round clash.
