Call the Midwife was back on BBC One with an emotional episode that saw newly-trained midwife Rosalind Clifford (played by Natalie Quarry) hint at her feelings towards Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte). The pair had been volunteering together at the homeless shelter and had grown close through their shared passion for helping others.
As their friendship blossomed, it became apparent Rosalind’s feelings for Cyril were growing stronger. However, her hopes appeared to be dashed in the latest episode after Cyril announced he was taking some time off to visit his wife Lucille (Leonie Elliott).
After Cyril received a letter from his wife in a previous episode, he realised how much he missed her and needed to spend time with her to keep their marriage intact. Rosalind was visibly devastated, but she told Cyril she was pleased he was finally able to travel to Jamaica.
Lucille’s departure came after she made a decision to prioritise her mental health following a miscarriage. She left during season 12 for a number of reasons, including depression, homesickness and the rising anti-immigrant sentiment in Britain at the time.
Actress Leonie Elliott confirmed the news she had left the show in a message on her social media. She said: “Having spent six years on a truly wonderful show, with a fantastic team, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with Lucille.
Lucille Robinson left Poplar to go back to Jamaica
“I feel honored to have represented the pioneering Windrush generation and their incredible impact on British society.”
While Lucille’s ticket to Jamaica might have been an open return, Cyril was hoping she would come back soon. Yet after a visit to Jamaica in season 12, he returned back to Poplar alone.
Viewers later heard she was doing well in a new job and was thriving being surrounded by her family.
There is now fear amongst fans that Cyril will leave the series to join his wife in Jamaica for good.
They had taken to in 2024 to discuss the possibility, with clutzycook saying: “I think they’ll do a Peter/Chummy. He’ll hang around for another season or so and then just vanish and it’ll be assumed that he went off to be with her finally.”
Don’t miss… [DISCUSSION] [EXPLAINER]
Cyril and Rosalind have grown closer
However, Wawa-85 said a relationship could still develop between Cyril and Rosalind, meaning Cyril could end up divorcing Lucille following his visit to Jamaica.
They wrote: “I don’t think they will just disappear Cyril as he’s been central to the story in quite a few episodes this season.
“There seems to be some subtle flirtation between the new midwives Joyce and Rosalind and Cyril so wonder if that may come of something.”
Sickofchildren agreed, adding: “He’s got a lot of chemistry with that new midwife, they’d make a nice couple. Lucille never appreciated him but then again he shouldn’t be forced into a new marriage.”
Ninevah8 added: “Came here to see this – he’ll be getting together with the new midwife (can’t remember her name) and it’ll open up the ongoing discussion about interracial relationships with main characters.”
Call the Midwife airs on One on Sundays at 8pm
