Walmart empanadas under public health alert for mislabeling, potential allergen

Some frozen empanadas sent to Walmart stores nationwide are under a public health alert for potential mislabeling and containing an allergen not listed on the label.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued the alert for Bettergoods’ Chicken Curry Empanadas, warning that the product might actually contain the brand’s Apple Cinnamon Empanadas.

The Apple Cinnamon Empanadas contain milk, and FSIS advised that anyone with a milk allergy should not eat the affected Chicken Curry Empanadas.

The frozen foods labeled as Chicken Curry Empanadas that could contain Apple Cinnamon Empanadas were created on Nov. 14, 2024, and packaged on Nov. 20-21, 2024, the FSIS said.

A recall was not issued because the product is no longer available in stores.

The yellow cardboard box the product is packaged in reads, “Bettergoods Traditionally Crafted Chicken Curry Empanadas,” with best by dates of May 21, 2026, or May 22, 2026. The side of the box reads, “EST. P33967.”

FSIS said in the alert it became aware of the issue after the product’s distributor received four complaints saying the Apple Cinnamon Empanadas were in boxes labeled as Chicken Curry Empanadas.

“There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” FSIS said in the alert. “Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.”

Broccoli sold at Walmart is currently under recall in 20 states due to listeria bacteria concerns, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a notice Dec. 31, 2024.
