PGA Tour star knocks back boozing accusations and clears up Guinness myth

golfer Shane Lowry has set the record straight on his perceived affection for Guinness after revealing he has cut down on his drinking in recent years.

The popular tipple is a favoured choice amongst Irish natives and the County Offaly man is no different, having been spotted with a pint in his home nation on numerous occasions.

Lowry has made no secret of the fact that he in the past after major victories in his golf career.

He celebrated his success at The Open in 2019 along with a huge crowd of friends and family at the Boar’s Head pub in Dublin, carrying the Claret Jug trophy in his hand.

In his honour, fans situated at pubs near to the Royal Portrush course in Northern Ireland drank their Guinness barrels dry.

And after Lowry helped Team Europe wins the Ryder Cup in 2021 and 2023, parties continued long into the early hours as Lowry and his close friend Rory McIlroy savoured their success.

But those days appear to be over for the 37-year-old after becoming something of a family man in recent years, having married his wife Wendy Honner in 2016.

The couple have two young daughters and Lowry says his role as a father-of-two in between events on the PGA Tour means he doesn’t have much time for booze anymore, while also clarifying that Guinness isn’t his favourite drink.

Responding to a question regarding his fondness for Guinness, Lowry said: “I wouldn’t say it’s very accurate at all but I’ll let people think what they think.

“I’m pretty easy going, I do love having a good time with my friends when I get the chance but you don’t get that much of a chance anymore.

“I’m married now with two kids and they take up most of my time.”

Even if Lowry doesn’t have much time to sit back with a pint of Guinness now, it hasn’t stopped him serving pints on behalf of pubs in Ireland.

In 2023, he visited the Village Inn in Bohola, County Mayo, and posted some snaps on his social media profile as he put his pint pouring skills to the test for their customers.

Instead of drinking Guinness, his busy life on the Tour means he has to keep himself with caffeinated beverages, with one in particular giving him some respite from the runway.

“One of my favourite things to do in the evenings is to sit down and have a Diet Coke,” he added. “People think I love drinking so much, don’t get me wrong, I like having a drink.

“But sitting back having a Diet Coke I’m a pretty happy man. Diet coke in the evenings and coffee in the mornings and I’m pretty happy.”
