According to Daniel Ufland, of , people travelling on long-haul can secure freebies in numerous ways.

“There are various ways to get free drinks on that many people don’t know,” affirmed Daniel.

And he confirmed “they aren’t underhand, or in any way inappropriate”, but are just “smart hacks that can help you get a bit more for your money”.

On a commercial long-haul , there could be a secondary menu in the airline’s magazine – or a digital version on the entertainment system.

There could be drinks on there that aren’t on the regular menu that are given as complimentary.

Mr Ufland added that frequent flyers would benefit from an airline’s loyalty programme, which typically offers complimentary drinks as a perk.

Sometimes, just asking the flight attendant for a complimentary drink can yield positive results, but only if you’re polite and dressed well.

“Appearance can have a subliminal effect on others that make them subconsciously see you in a positive way,” Mr Ufland elaborated.

Anybody celebrating a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary, should let the flight crew know – they might just offer a free goodwill drink.

Mr Ufland also said it pays dividends to be observant; if a flight attendant offers a complimentary drink to another passenger nearby, asking nicely to have one too could work.

“The inference is that if they don’t favour you, too, you are being slightly disadvantaged as a guest of the airline,” said Mr Ufland.

“And no airline wants that, so if you ask in the right (polite) way, you might just get lucky.”

Some credit cards offer complimentary drinks and free upgrades on flights, so be on the lookout for such perks when you sign up to a new card.

And lastly, Mr Ufland pointed out that some airlines have happy hour promotions when drinks are on the house.

“Happy hours on planes tend to be limited because airlines don’t want to have to deal with drunk passengers,” said Mr Ufland.

“But you may well get free soft drinks during the flight’s happy hour, and that will at least quench your thirst.”
