Emmerdale actress ‘can’t believe this is happening’ as co-star dies suddenly

star Gemma Oaten has been rocked by the sudden death of her co-star.

The soap star, 40, paid tribute to stage legend Paul Hutton who has sadly died. They starred together in 2018 pantomime Beauty and the Beast at London’s Shaw Theatre, with Gemma playing Belle while Paul played Silly Billy.

The former Rachel Breckle star announced the sad news via , writing: “I can’t believe this is happening. [Paul Hutton] you were one of the best – funny, kind, caring and incredibly talented. My heart is shattered knowing you’re no longer here to brighten our lives.

“Rest in peace, wonderful man. You will be loved forever and always.” Alongside a few snaps of the pair giggling together in costume, Gemma added: “This is how I remember you. Always making us smile #ForeverInOurHearts.”

Fans turned to the comments section to share their own memories of Paul, with one writing: “He was my dance teacher and choreographer, the only one in the 90s who made me think I was good enough dance-wise (he loved an underdog). I can’t comprehend it. Sending you love and strength Gemma.”

Someone else said: “Can’t believe he’s gone. What an absolute character, so full of life.” As a third fan echoed: “We don’t know what to say Gemma. Thinking of you in our prayers. Sending lots of love and hugs.”

Paul had documented his struggles in 2024, writing back in February: “This is not a good time. I’m safe, so don’t worry, but oh my goodness life and family slap you sideways when you least expect it sometimes.”

The Billy Elliot The Musical star had also been struggling to secure stage work, admitting in 2023 that he’d had “five massive rejections from the theatre industry” and also been rejected from a position working at a dog kennel.

He said: “You all know how much I love theatre. I’m so passionate about it. It’s given me a lifetime of joy and I’ve met some incredible people/friends along the way.

“Lately, however, the work hasn’t been so forthcoming and it’s tough living in London at the moment during these extremely tough times. I know you all relate. Rejection is obviously part of the process, but sometimes it hits much harder than normal.”

His cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
