Donald Trump ‘to meet Vladimir Putin’ with Ukraine top of the agenda

Donald Trump has revealed that a meeting is being arranged between himself and Russian President .

The incoming US president gave no timeline for when the head-to-head might take place but has previously promised to end the war in ‘in 24 hours’.

Earlier this week though he amended the time it might take to bring the conflict to a halt to ‘six months’.

But in new remarks made at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Mr Trump said of the Russian President: “He wants to meet and we are setting it up.”

However, Russian news agency Tass later quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that the US has still not yet formally requested a meeting.

But Kyiv has been nervously waiting to see how the new American administration will treat the ongoing conflict.

Mr Trump has promised to negotiate an end to the war in soon after he takes office on 20 January and has expressed scepticism about US military and financial support for Kyiv.

“President Putin wants to meet,” Mr Trump said. “He has said that even publicly, we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”

Mr Trump has nominated Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant-general in the US military, to be special envoy to and for his second administration.

However, the envoy recently postponed a planned trip to Kyiv until after the presidential inauguration, giving no reason.

Lt-Gen Kellogg outlined his ideas for how the US could end the war in a research paper published by the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank, in April last year.

He proposed that should only get further US aid if it agreed to participate in peace talks with Moscow.

However, The paper also suggested that if Moscow refused to take part, the US should continue its aid to .

Following Mr Trump’s election win in November, Ukrainian President said he believed that, with Trump as president, the war would “end sooner” than it otherwise would have.

He said the two had had a “constructive exchange” by phone, though he did not say whether Trump had made any demands regarding possible talks with .
