Warwick Davis sues hospital for negligence after wife’s tragic death

Warwick Davis is suing the hospital that treated his wife Samantha before her death in March 2024.

Samantha died aged just 53 at University College Hospital, where she was being treated for a spinal condition.

Now her grieving widower Warwick has instructed law firm Irwin Mitchell to represent him and his family, with specialist medical negligence solicitor Madeline Nugent helping to investigate the circumstances surrounding actress Samantha’s death.

Coroner Mrs Jean Harkin is presiding over the inquest, which will seek to clarify whether the treatment Samantha received contributed to her death. It took place remotely from Inner West London Coroner’s Court.

In 2019, Samantha first fell ill with sepsis and was admitted to intensive care after operations on her spine at UCL Hospital.

Samantha was diagnosed with achondroplasia when she was a child. The bone disorder causes dwarfism, and is similar to the condition that affects her husband – spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita.

In her later years, her mobility had become impaired, but she was “determined that it would not impact her quality of life”.

Warwick branded Sammy his “favourite human”, calling her his “most trusted confidante and an ardent supporter of everything I did in my career.” In a statement after her death he wrote: “She was a unique character, always seeing the sunny side of life she had a wicked sense of humour and always laughed at my bad jokes.

“It was like having a super-power. Without Sammy, there would have been no Tenable quiz show, no Willow series. No Idiot Abroad Series 3.”

He added: “She was passionate about helping people, without judgement. She had time for everyone and a genuine listening ear.”

Their children Harrison and Annabelle said “her love and happiness carried us through our whole lives. Mum is our best friend and we’re honoured to have received a love like hers.”
