It’s been almost two months since the epic “Chicago Fire” midseason finale left fans questioning the fate of one main character.
Now, the NBC series is finally back for the second half of Season 13.

Is ‘Chicago Fire’ new tonight?
“Chicago Fire” will return from its midseason hiatus with a new episode on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 9/8c on NBC.
Titled “A Favor,” Season 13 Episode 9 will follow Cruz (Joe Minoso) as his “past comes back to haunt him,” per an episode description.
Elsewhere, Severide (Taylor Kinney) “prepares to teach an arson class at the academy” while Mouch (Christian Stolte) “searches for a victim’s next of kin.”
What happened in the midseason finale of ‘Chicago Fire?
The most recent episode of “Chicago Fire,” titled “Quicksand,” aired on Nov. 20, 2024. During the midseason finale, Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and Mouch got ready to take their officer exams.
When asked if his character was prepared to become captain of a firehouse, Eigenberg offered the following response to NBC Insider: “Do the pants fit? Do the shoes fit? … With the chief role, I would step into it, but you don’t prepare for it. I mean, you do, but how does life unfold? You never know.”
Meanwhile, Cruz encountered a trying experience from his past in the episode. In Season 1, he left a man named Flaco (José Antonio García) in a burning building after the gang leader threatened Cruz’s brother Leon (Jeff Lima).
In the Season 13 midseason finale, Leon visited Cruz to tell him that Flaco’s cousin, a former gang member, was on parole and expressed concern that he could be in danger now that he had been released from prison.
Simultaneously, Cruz also started finding mysterious pendants in multiple locations. When he had one tested, he learned that they were filled with ashes and wondered if they contained Flaco’s remains.
When Cruz is at church later in the episode, he gets a visit from Flaco’s cousin, who says he knows he left Flaco to die.
