Milk is a priority on every shopping list, as most people cannot survive a morning without a cup of tea or , but many people may not realise they are storing this dairy product incorrectly.

Kelsie, an expert from Alberta Milk, has shared that you should always avoid keeping milk inside the fridge door as it will make it spoil faster.

She said: “Store milk on refrigerator shelves where it is cooler rather than in the refrigerator doors.”

inside the refrigerator door is not ideal, as it is the warmest area of the refrigerator, and the temperature constantly changes every time you open the door.

Milk is highly perishable and if you want to ensure it stays fresh for as long as possible, then keep it on the middle or lower shelves inside the fridge where it is consistently cold.

Milk often spoils before its time because it is highly sensitive to temperature changes. Since it is a dairy product, it is more likely to attract bacteria if left at room temperature for too long.

Never leave milk on the kitchen countertop for more than two hours, as it can cause bacteria to multiply and expose it to sunlight. When milk is left in light, it will destroy the vitamins in the drink, not to mention heat it up, which will make it taste rancid.

Kelsie said: “Avoid exposing milk to light, as light destroys certain vitamins, such as vitamin D and riboflavin.”

When shopping, it is also best to buy dairy products last to minimise their exposure to warmer temperatures which will also keep it fresher for longer.

Kelsie said: “When shopping, pick up the milk last so it doesn’t warm up while you fill your basket. Refrigerate at a temperature of between 0C and 4C as soon as possible after purchase.”

It may seem obvious, but always check the best-before date when buying dairy products and try to reach the back of the shelf to ensure you are buying the freshest milk possible.

Milk can also be frozen if you wish to keep it as fresh as possible, which can help you save a little bit of money on your shopping. However, this can change the texture of the drink.

Kelsie said: “Milk can be frozen for up to six weeks without any impact on its flavour and nutritional value; however, upon thawing, it can separate and lose its smooth texture.

“Partly skimmed and skim milk freeze better than whole milk (3.25 percent). Thaw milk in the fridge. If the milk separates upon thawing, beat it with an electric mixer or an immersion blender with the whip attachment.”
