Remembering to regularly clean a microwave can be tricky, but it will start to accumulate grease and grime from food if negelcted.

Microwaves that haven’t been cleaned for a long time not only cause nasty odours but can also become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Burnt-on food splatters are common on the appliances, and much like ovens, removing the residue can be tough due to their awkward shape and size.

Fortunately, you don’t need to invest in expensive cleaning products – one simple ingredient from your kitchen can do the trick.

According to one cleaning fan, all you need is a lemon and a bowl of water.

According to @sinchiesreusablepouches on , she explained that the hack busts through grease and grime “straight away”.

She said: “It makes cleaning the microwave really easy, which is what I’m here for.”

To clean your microwave, fill a microwave-safe bowl halfway with water and add half a lemon.

She said: “Then you pop it in the microwave for two minutes. Once it’s done, the key is to leave the microwave closed for quite a bit longer to let it sweat and steam.

“Then all you need is to wipe it out with a microfibre cloth and the grime and the dirt comes off so easily straight away,”

She added that the microwave is left smelling fresh and like lemon.
