While many take part in Dry January for the good of their health, there are a number of celebrities who have been sober for years.

Quitting alcohol can have a host of benefits including weight loss, better sleep and improved mental health.

From to Anne Hathaway, these celebrities have their own unique reasons for quitting booze – from addiction to wanting to feel better within themselves.

One thing that they do have in common is that they say their lives have changed for the better since going sober.

Bradley Cooper

Bradley quit booze aged 29 after realising he would “ruin his life” if he continued to drink. The Star is Born actor told The Hollywood Reporter: “I don’t drink or do drugs anymore. I realised I wasn’t going to live up to my potential, and that scared the hell out of me. I thought, ‘Wow, I’m actually gonna ruin my life. I’m really gonna ruin it.'”

Lewis Hamilton

The F1 star stopped drinking in 2023 to put an end to debilitating hangovers and the harmful effect alcohol was having on his mental health. He told Vogue: “I don’t know if I’m going to drink again. Since I’ve stopped drinking, I’ve just been feeling so much better, so much more clarity. I sleep better, I wake up in the morning and I can still get up at 5 am.”

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway revealed she had quit drinking in 2019, explaining that she felt alcohol was “wallowing fuel”. The 42-year-old told Vanity Fair: “I knew deep down it wasn’t for me. And it just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But none. If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it.”

The Harry Potter star went sober for good in 2012 after using alcohol to cope with the pressures of being a child actor. He even says he went to work on Harry Potter still drunk and can “point to many scenes” where he is “dead behind the eyes”. Speaking about his decision to quit, the 35-year-old  told Off Camera: “Ultimately, it was my own decision. I woke up one morning after a night going like, ‘This is probably not good.’”
