THE KING and Queen are just like you or I when it comes to gardening, TV presenter Monty Don has revealed.
The professional gardener is a close friend of Queen Camilla and for his new series he visits Birkhall, the couple’s home on the Balmoral estate.
Monty Don said: “I went to talk to the Queen about a new project and we chatted about gardens. Afterwards I got in a taxi and chatted about gardens to the driver – we had almost the same conversation I’d just had with the Queen.
“Someone told me that the gardeners there are often told not to do all the pruning because the King really enjoys doing it himself.
“The King and Queen are doing exactly the same as you and I might do in our gardens.“ There are very few other countries where you’d have the same scenario.”
For Monty Don’s British Gardens, which starts on Friday on BBC2 at 8pm, he explores gardens all over Britain including the garden at Birkhall which he describes as the royal couple’s “favourite garden.”
“There’s a two-acre area which, ten years ago, was just an empty patch. But to commemorate the birth of Prince George, an arboretum was planted there. “It’s quite substantial now, with large trees and lots of shrubs, many of which were apparently planted by the King. I’m told this is now his favourite part of the garden.“It’s a grand garden, beautifully looked after by a really good team, but it’s very personal for the King and Queen.
“They care about every aspect of it, what’s done, how it’s done, when it’s done – this is what brings it alive. The gardens at Windsor are immaculately looked after, but no one would describe them as personal. But Birkhall is a home.”
