Officials at the Department for Transport (DfT) are confident that manufacturers will not face massive fines under a new introduced last year.

UK-based car firms must meet a quota which stood at 22% last year.

This target sets out the and firms must produce in a single year.

Manufacturers who don’t meet the target through their own production must buy credits from other firms or be

These start at £15,000 for every car over the limit meaning companies on the wrong side of the numbers could be dealt a heavy blow.

However, the DfT is sure that the “whole market” has met the goal and escaped heavy fees in a boost for UK engineering.

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “Thanks to the flexibilities in the ZEV Mandate, we’re confident the whole market has complied with the 22% target and that no car manufacturer will need to pay fines.”

As part of the flexibilities in the ZEV mandate rules, manufacturers have a CO2 target as well as a target on the number of models sold.

This CO2 target is based on their emissions in 2021 but firms who have lowered their tidal emissions since can convert the extra towards the ZEV compliance.

Preliminary data suggests that when these figures are taken into account, the car market as a whole will have achieved the 22% ZEV mandate target for year one.

However, the rules have already been updated with ZEV mandate targets increased every year.

Car firms must now ensure are made up of zero-emission models with the goal rising to 80% by the end of the decade.

The DfT added: “We’ve invested over £2.3 billion to support industry and consumers make the switch, rolled out more than 72,000 public chargers, and launched a consultation to invite the sector to shape how we achieve the transition to ZEVs.

“Getting this transition right as more people make a switch to electric vehicles will support the growth of the UK market and will provide an opportunity to tap into a multibillion-pound industry that will create high-paid jobs for decades to come.”
