UK snow maps show all of UK hammered by snow barrage in hours – areas worst affected

The UK is braced for a barrage of snow across the country with .

has issued two yellow warnings and two amber warnings stretching the length of the country as it says that the weather could bring significant disruption and danger.

, the most severe of the four, come into force today and warn of snow and ice through Wales, the Midlands and into .

Newcastle in the North East could be set for 10cm of snow by tomorrow whilst 90 miles south in Leeds, the city could be set for as much as 17 cm.

warns of the amount of snow that could be set to fall in northern areas.

In a statement the agency said: “Snow will accumulate through the evening and into Sunday before turning to rain in central and southern areas of England. It will continue to fall as snow in northern England, where some significant accumulations could develop through Sunday.”

On the west coast, cities such as Carlisle will see as much as 15cm of snow, especially in hilly areas.

Other northern cities such as Sheffield and Hull are also braced for significant snowfall, with Yorkshire cities said to have as much as 20cm of snow by Sunday evening, rising to as much as 38cm through the week.

Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly, said: “This weekend will bring a range of weather hazards to the UK, notable snow accumulations, freezing rain, ice and heavy rain as well as some gusty conditions.

“We have issued a number of , including Amber warnings for snow and ice in parts of England and Wales. Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, where 5 cm or more could accumulate fairly widely, with as much as 20-30 cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and potentially 30-40 cm over parts of the Pennines.

“This, accompanied by strengthening winds, may lead to drifting of lying snow.”

Manchester is set to see around 12cm of snow but that might not be the biggest danger for residents.

The city as well as areas of Wales are forecast by WXCharts.com to see freezing rain, a rare weather phenomenon which can cause havoc for motorists.

Jason continued: “There is a risk of freezing rain across parts of the Midlands and northern England, but especially Wales, adding to the risk of ice and leading to some treacherous conditions in places. As the supercooled rain droplets hit the surface they instantly freeze, covering everything in a layer of ice, making it extremely dangerous.”

National Highways Severe Weather Resilience Manager, Darren Clark, said: “If you are travelling this weekend, keep your distance and reduce your speed. Gritters will be out treating our roads around the clock when ice or snow is forecast, but it is still important to drive to the conditions.

“Even in conditions that seem normal and where the snow is not settling you could always experience slippery conditions.
