Max Homa was one of 2024’s biggest winners, having taken home £600,000 following a third-place finish at the .

The American star secured his sole top-five finish in a major, tied alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Colin Morikawa, as the trio came in after champion and runner-up Ludvig Aberg.

Homa was in contention for the title before a tee shot on the 12th flew over the green, into the bushes, and he was forced to take a drop before an eventual double bogey.

Being three shots behind Scheffler was insurmountable, finishing seven behind on the final scorecard, but a consolation prize of over half a million pounds would have softened the blow for Homa, who later gave an insight into a heartwarming surprise that followed.

Speaking in a press conference, the 34-year-old said: “I absolutely demolished Chick-fil-A on my drive down. This sweet woman paid for it, actually, in the drive-thru line.

“And then, when I got into town I went to Giuseppe’s and got a pizza. I never really eat pizza, cheese doesn’t sit so well with me, but I am all by myself this week so I decided to splurge a little.”

He was then asked to come back and talk about the woman who paid for his meal, having already banked £20million in prize money across his career, as he was put on the spot about the encounter.

“It was cool,” Homa, explained. “I don’t know, I was in the drive-thru by myself and I went to order and the person taking the orders told me that the woman in the row next to me had paid for whatever I was going to get.

“She said that her son is like three or four and I am his favourite golfer, so it is pretty cool. It was… yeah, I don’t know, those kinds of things, I still pinch myself. I am not quite sure.

“Yeah she paid for it, I rolled my window down and we chatted for a minute or so, and then I ate it.”

A reporter reiterated that a woman had paid lunch for the “guy who just won like £600k” only for an awkward-looking Homa to reply: “Yeah, I don’t know. It was quite kind, that’s what I say.

“I just pinch myself at times with the kindness that people have given me just because I play some golf. I feel very fortunate for that.”

Homa has most recently been in action this week at The Sentry in Hawaii, hitting the links for the first time since becoming a new brand ambassador for Lululemon.

He joins fellow PGA Tour golfer Min Woo Lee, NFL wide receiver DK Metcalf, NBA guard Jordan Clarkson, NFL star Connor Bedard and tennis player Leylah Fernandez in aligning themselves with the workout and lounge apparel brand.
