United have no budget to make signings with in the January transfer window, meaning player sales will be mandatory for to reshuffle his floundering squad. As one of the top earners at Old Trafford, Casemiro’s prospective sale would take a huge strain off the wage bill and improve the club’s PSR position.

Neville told last year: “Casemiro, there’s no doubt – we all said it by the way – £60million? £70m? And £20m-a-year for five years is a £170m investment. That is a massive investment. It’s not a smart or shrewd signing when you look at it from a [big picture] point of view. None of us thought that.”
