Darts fans rub salt in Luke Humphries’ wounds after surprise Peter Wright loss

Darts fans mocked after the star suffered a shock defeat to at the on Sunday evening. The reigning champion was after losing the fourth round clash 4-1.

Ahead of the encounter Wright, 54, had insisted he “can be better” than Humphries and teenage sensation Luke Littler.

And Humphries hit back by claiming the “egg” would be on his opponent’s “face” if he didn’t back up his fighting talk.

Wright, who won the World Darts Championship in 2020 and 2022, proved he can still compete with the best players in the world by dispatching Humphries.

And when the Professional Darts Corporation posted an image of the winning scoreline to , fans were quick to rub salt in Humphries’ wounds.

“Well, I guess Humphries shouldn’t have p***** the guy off,” wrote bitter_blue_nose. Darts fan nealon_96 penned: “Humphries will never speak bad on Peter Wright ever again.” And leight6n added: “That’s what Humphries deserves for trash talking the goat.”

A host of darts followers were also quick to praise Wright, with jesse.grv writing: “Don’t perform anything all year, then play your best game of the year and eliminate the reigning world champion there, is peak darts.”

Meanwhile, juicydarts180 exclaimed: “Backed up the talk. Cold. Unreal.” And kandler_chris_1 added: “Where are all the people who always say he is finished now? Great performance Peter!”

Humphries was the second favourite to lift the Sid Waddell trophy ahead of his showdown with Wright after beating the favourite Luke Littler in last season’s final.

The 29-year-old opened his campaign by thrashing Thibault Tricole 3-0, before thumping Nick Kenny 4-0. But he failed to sparkle against Wright and will have to wait another year for the opportunity to win his second world title.

And after his defeat, : “I probably put too much pressure on myself tonight, but I thought I played okay.

“I kept hitting the treble first dart but I couldn’t follow it. Peter played fantastically and backed up what he said pre-match, so fair play to him. I’m still the world number one, and this result won’t deter me from going on to win more.

“I know that if I’m going to be playing this sport for 20 more years I’m not going to win it every time. And if someone puts in a performance like that against you, you have to accept that the better player won.”
