Coronation Street is set to be a whirlwind of drama in 2025.
In 2024, viewers were gripped by the storyline of troubled teen Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), who tragically ended up murdering her abuser Joel Deering (Calum Lill). In a sorrowful twist, fans bid farewell to Paul Doreman (Pete Ash) as he succumbed to MND.
However, 2025 promises an array of shocking moments, including the unexpected return of a villain, a soap legend’s cancer diagnosis, numerous romantic entanglements and much more.
‘s new boss Kate Brooks gave a sneak peek into what’s in store on the cobbles in 2025.
‘Massive stunt’

The Platts are set for a tumultuous 2025 on the cobbles. Kate hinted at a significant escalation for the beloved family, so much so that the soap will feature a “massive stunt.”
She confirmed the thrilling stunt, adding: “It comes to a massive head in early February when we play a massive stunt which has massive consequences for David [Platt]. In trying to protect everyone, he ends up losing quite a few things that he holds dear.”
The new boss also let slip that “somebody does get embroiled in David’s downfall which is quite unexpected”.
Kevin Webster’s cancer news
Soap icon Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) is set for a heart-wrenching storyline. Kate revealed: “As we go into the new year, Kevin will discover he has got testicular cancer which causes a massive strain on his relationship.”
scriptwriters are weaving a tale of struggle and betrayal for the beloved character Abi Franklin, as the show’s narrative consultant Kate Brooks revealed: “Abi is a really strong character, but she is going through her own turmoil at the same time. We want to tell this really truthfully, we’ve been working closely with MacMillan to make sure that we tell the story right.”
However, the plot thickens as it seems Kevin’s relationship with Abi might hit rocky ground. Kate teased future twists, saying: “But ultimately it’s about his relationship with Abi and that is going to truly tested.
Abi is going through her own situation as she struggles in the aftermath of a big event that happens in January. She loves Kevin and he loves her, but the temptation comes Abi’s way let’s put it that way..”
Romances

Not forgetting romantic entanglements, Weatherfield promises new love interests.
“There might be a new man for Todd [Grimshaw] – which will come with its own tests and trials and tribulations shall we say,” Kate disclosed, hinting at challenges ahead for Todd who “has been single for donkey’s years and he’s fantastic”.
An intriguing partnership is developing at the solicitors office as well, with Kate mentioning: “Adam [Barlow] and Alya [Nazir] are kind of another romance. It’s a bit of a slow burn, I think they are really interesting to have in the solicitor’s office.”
Villain returns

And there’s a familiar face returning to stir up trouble. Marc Baylis is set to return as Rob Donovan, with Kate sharing the excitement: “We last left Rob languishing in prison.”
producer Kate Oates revealed that Rob Donovan’s return to the show may not be as smooth as expected, hinting that his character might not have changed as much as initially thought: “But he comes back to the show, and we think he might be a reformed character. We think he’s seen the error of his ways, whether that’s the case or not, I don’t know.”
Rob’s return is set to cause tension, particularly with his sister Carla, who has recently started a romance with DS Lisa Swain. Kate explained: “But Rob definitely comes back and causes a lot of trouble for Carla and Lisa.
“Just when Carla and Lisa think it’s safe for them to sit down and watch , Rob Donovan comes along and kind of scuppers all of that.”
Cassie’ evil plan

Furthermore, Kate confirmed that Cassie Plummer, who previously poisoned Ken Barlow, will continue to plot against him in 2025. “Cassie is great to have in the Barlows, she causes so much fun and I love her relationship with Kenny. There will be a lot more of that,” Kate said.
However, Kate also highlighted the complexity of Cassie’s character, stating: “The friendship is genuine and real, but Cassie has had a bad life and a terrible upbringing. She’s made mistakes in the past and sometimes it’s hard to shake off that persona and that’s what we’ll see with Cassie.”
Kate concluded: “She’ll be struggling with the kind of the good angel and bad angel on her shoulder and which way is she gonna go? But ultimately she does stir up a lot of trouble and a lot of bother. So, Cassie and Ken keep your eyes on them two because it’s gonna get good!”
