The Velveteins: Rainbow-bridging the crisp and soaring psychedelia of the ’60s and the crunchy indie rock explosion that kicked off the millennium, these local funboys put on the kind of show where you end up effortlessly smiling and happy.

Free Skate Rentals at City Hall Plaza: The Edmonton Arts Council has a lovely little free-fun program going on here, and starting Friday through Jan. 3, its holiday hours are extended Noon – 9 p.m., with the exception of New Year’s Eve Tuesday.

First-come, first-serve on the skates, and please note the skating is weather dependent — so not so much on the recent slushy days, but things are looking to slightly cool off to just right in the next little bit.

(During open hours, P.S., pop into City Hall and see the Hear Our Voices: Michel People & Residential School exhibit, a chance to witness stories of generations of people who survived on the northwest outskirts of the city.)

Details: Noon – 9 p.m. through Jan. 3, 6 p.m. – Midnight Dec. 31 at City Hall Plaza, no charge

Nosferatu (2024): In case you were not watching the most artful ball of terror of the year on its Christmas Day release, you seriosly want to experience this beast on the big screen.

Director Robert Eggers can happily add his latest to the pile of cinematic masterpieces including The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman — the only complaint I had on that one being that Nicole Kidman and Anya Taylor-Joy should have been covered in way more mud given the grubby setting.

No spoilers here, but this Nosferatu ain’t your great-great-grandparents’ Symphony of Horror in this stunning dread zeppelin, and Robin Carolan delivers yet another score worth having on vinyl and playing with the lights out.

Rated 14A, 132 mins.
