During a segment of TODAY on Dec. 26, NBC correspondent Vicky Nguyen had to admit she could not put her best foot forward. The reason: She had a wardrobe malfunction with her footwear, something she blamed on a “mom brain moment” the day after Christmas.
Nguyen paired her chic purple pantsuit with … some comfy bright yellow UGG slippers. The look was called out on-air by co-host Peter Alexander.
In a segment discussing student loan changes in 2025, Alexander and Nguyen were joined by co-host Laura Jarrett and NBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff.
After the segment, Alexander asked Nguyen to kick up her heels to show her “Christmas slippers,” which Alexander called a “good look.”
Nguyen immediately said, “Oh no, no, Peter!” as the camera panned back to reveal that she was wearing her UGGs with her suit instead of normal work shoes.
Nguyen, who is a mom to three daughters (Emerson, 15, Odessa, 12, and Renley, 8) said the UGGs were just a “mom brain” wardrobe malfunction.
“This is the day after Christmas, kind of like mom brain moment where I thought I had the shoes and I didn’t have the shoes,” she explained.
She went on to thank the director who had “cropped it out” of the live shot before Alexander had pointed them out.
Soboroff jumped to her defense, jokingly asking Alexander to “show us your tank top,” which Alexander played along with, pretending to rip open his shirt to reveal a tank top underneath.
Nguyen laughed, thanking Soboroff for his help before defending her UGGs.
“Listen, they’re very comfortable, I will say,” she said.
Dylan Dreyer justified Nguyen’s choice of footwear, adding that “We all want the cozy feel after Christmas, we ate too much, we’re just tired.”
Nguyen tells TODAY.com that her stage manager suggested she leave a pair of shoes in one of the green room closets.
“Which I plan to do in the new year to avoid future show-drobe malfunctions,” she says over email. “I totally blanked on bringing shoes this morning and wore my comfy UGG platforms which happen to be neon yellow.”
She adds that she never meant for the UGGs to make it on air, but then Alexander called her out.
“All in good fun, so I don’t have any beef with him,” she says. “I will say, it reminds me of a couple times I’ve gotten dressed in the dark and ended up with two watches on my wrist.”
Nguyen posted the clip on Instagram afterwards, reflecting on her UGGs making the shot.
“That time @peteralexandertv outed me for rolling slippers,” she wrote in the caption. “Ya got me.”
