Taking the time to switch off certain devices can help you save money
Saving money after Christmas can be a struggle, but it can be made easier if you switch off some of the biggest energy-draining appliances around your home.
Many people do not realise that many continue to use when they are plugged in, even if they are not in use, which can cause your electricity to skyrocket.
Dan, an expert from , has highlighted some of the “biggest culprits” that drain energy so you stop wasting both electricity and money this winter.
He said: “Any appliance that stays plugged into a socket that’s still switched on is using an electric current.
“Even in sleep or standby modes, some items continue to use energy for updates, connecting to remote servers, and recording data.”

What items to always turn off to save money
Televisions
Make sure to switch your television off properly at night as it continues to take up power sending a signal to your remote control and will also use energy if it has a quick start-up feature.
Dan said “TVs are certainly one of the worst vampire devices in your home. On standby, TVs are ready to receive a signal from the remote control, to power on at any time.”
If you have anything plugged into your television like a Sky TV box or gaming console then these also drain energy unnecessarily.
Switching off your television can save you roughly £25 a year, which may not seem like much but will quickly add up with other energy-draining divides around the home.
Microwaves continue to use power even if not in use
Microwaves
Microwaves are one of the worst energy drainers in the kitchen, as they continue to use power to keep their control panel and clock powered.
Dan said: “Microwaves might not be an appliance you’d consider being on standby. Yet they still use energy to display the clock and await commands.”
Taking the time to unplug your microwave after using it can save you around £16 a year.
Make sure to always turn off your tumble dryer as it will still use power
Tumble dryers
Many people use the tumble dryer to stop laundry piling up, but make sure you are always switching it off.
Dan said: “Leaving your tumble dryer on standby can cost you somewhere around £5 per year.
“Your tumble dryer is an appliance you probably don’t use every day. Switch it off at the plug and save yourself a bit of money.”
Dishwashers
Dishwashers need to use a lot of energy to heat water and boost their heating element, so it is incredibly important to turn it off properly once your dishes are done.
Dan said: “If not switched off at the plug, your dishwasher is always ready to run at the push of a button. Leaving your dishwasher on standby can cost you somewhere around £6 per year.”
