Ditch your rake in favour of this handy hack instead
You don’t need to spend hours raking up leaves that have scattered all over your . A gardening fan revealed that you can turn the fallen debris into mulch instead.
DIY enthusiast Ben, who posts plenty of tutorials on his Meyers Makes page, revealed how this is a quick and easy way to keep your looking tip top.
He said: “Instead of raking leaves into bags, an easy way to get rid of them is to mulch them with a lawn mower. This is beneficial to your yard because it puts nutrients back into the lawn, which is going to make it thrive.”
Since it was posted, the clip has garnered more than 800 likes and plenty of positive comments. One gushed: “I always used this method and collect the crush leaf to do compost. It works great.”
A second wrote: “So true, nature put those leaves there for a reason.” And a third added: “Natural fertiliser for your lawn.”
Don’t miss… [TOP TIP] [REVEALED]
As the comments suggest, there are plenty of benefits that come with trying the hack.
Mulched grass clippings decompose and release valuable nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, back into the soil. This can reduce the need for synthetic fertilisers.
It can be super beneficial in winter as it helps to protect grass roots from frost and keeps them insulated.
What’s more, a layer of grass or leaf clippings can aid soil moisture. This helps to keep the lawn nice and hydrated even if you don’t water it consistently.
Another benefit of trying the tip is that clippings can provide a natural barrier to sunlight. This may suppress the growth of some weeds.
However, be careful you’re not tackling too many leaves at the same time. One commenter said: “I live north end of cul-de-sac and get leaves from about 50 trees south of me. I would have three inches of paste if mulching and it would kill my lawn.”
And another advised: “Depends on exactly how many leaves you have at a certain point. The chopped up leaves are too thick to decompose properly and choke the grass.”
As a general guide, try keeping your layer of mulch to two to four inches. It’s good to be able to see the grass blades peeking through, as these suggests they won’t get suffocated.
