have a knack for sneaking into homes and thanks to their remarkable flexibility, can wriggle through spaces as tiny as a 20p coin.

These might enter through unsealed gaps around pipes and wires, cracks in the foundation, or even overlooked holes in your walls.

One troubled homeowner, desperate to keep these unwelcome visitors out of her house and , turned to the Hints and Tips Facebook group seeking wisdom.

Kerri Piers urgently posted: “Rats! There are rats in my house and garden. One seems hell-bent on hiding in small spaces of my home and garden.

“He’s flicked compost everywhere, is digging small scurry holes under the decking and I have found him in my kitchen. I don’t want to have to kill him. Is there anything I can use to encourage him to leave?”

Sympathetic group members suggested that Kerri could employ scent-based repellents to banish the rodent intruder, capitalising on rats’ acute sense of smell.

The clear favourite remedy was eucalyptus oil, with Susan Timson advising: “The best deterrent for them is to use eucalyptus oil in water and spray it wherever you see them because they hate it.

“It does work. My neighbours building work disturbed them and their answer (which didn’t work very effectively) was to put down poison.

“They all came down to my flat to die (it’s quieter) and stank it out as it was summer. Had a house full of flies as a consequence.

“I phoned the council, but they wanted £150 which I didn’t have, so I burnt some essential oils (all the insect repellant ones) after hearing some in a cupboard.

“After 20 minutes, no more scratching. They had vanished for good! I went online and discovered that some scientists in India had discovered that eucalyptus oil was the most effective repellant.

“I made up a spray and pretty much sprayed around the whole of my flat and they went! No more scratching, no more droppings, gone.”

Other community members echoed the sentiment. Jan Thompson remarked, “I use eucalyptus oil. Rats and mice hate the smell. I used it the winter before last and haven’t seen any since.”

Zahedan Mangera advised: “Scatter eucalyptus oil-covered cotton balls. They have a fear of it. Works outdoors too.”

Janice Sammut shared her success story: “Eucalyptus oil worked in my home mixed with water in a spray bottle.”
