Nothing is better than filling a mug with your favourite beverage to keep yourself warm during the cold winter weather, but it can be annoying if your cups are constantly stained.

Mugs often have dark brown marks all over them due to a compound called tannins, which is often found in hot drinks such as , or hot chocolate.

Tannin are harmless, but they need to be away, as the residue can build up and make your favourite drink taste bitter.

However, it is incredibly easy to remove tannin marks from your mug without having to scrub for ages or use a harsh chemical like bleach, as all you need is one ingredient from your kitchen cupboard.

One expert at has shared that one of the most effective ways to clean mugs and get them sparkling again is to use simple baking soda.

They said: “Commonly known as the chemical leavener that helps cakes rise, baking soda is also a champion household cleaning product.

“The compound has long been hailed as an excellent stain remover. It’s abrasive, but only mildly so, so it works away stains without damaging your cute mug.”

Baking soda is the best way to clean mugs. It is alkaline, which means it can easily break down acidic tannin stains and help loosen them so they wipe off easily.

You can also or to help dissolve cup stains, but many people prefer alternative methods as they can leave a lingering scent if not cleaned thoroughly afterwards.

How to get rid of mug stains 

You need only fill your mug with an equal amount of baking soda and hot water and leave it in the sink.

Let the solution soak for five minutes or until the water has cooled. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe your mug, and the stains should come away without any effort.

Give your mug a good rinse to wash away the baking soda residue, and you should have a clean mug with no stains so you can enjoy a warming drink without worrying about the washing up afterwards.
