A cruise ship worker has revealed what life is really like onboard on Christmas day.
The festive season is often a time of relaxation with friends and family, but while some celebrate, others will still be hard at work, trying to recreate magical experiences for travellers.
Anette Taylor, a ship worker has revealed what life is like onboard these exciting ships on Christmas day for both workers and travellers.
From the moment guests step aboard, they are greeted by a ship transformed into a Christmas haven: “The ship is sumptuously decorated with several large Christmas trees, garlands, wreaths, a gingerbread village, and much more all through the season—not just on Christmas Day,” said Anette.
Guests celebrating Christmas Day on a cruise can enjoy a truly festive atmosphere on and off the ship. On a Riviera cruise, the day begins with breakfast served from 7 to 9am, followed by a walking tour of .

The Christmas dinner on board usually consists of six courses.
Back onboard, the holiday spirit continues with thoughtfully curated celebrations. Lunch is served from 1 to 2:30pm, and a special afternoon tea from 4 to 5pm features festive treats like mince pies, Christmas Stollen, Champagne, and Glühwein and the added bonus of presents to all guests.
“Guests are treated to local specialities, afternoon tea, and a very special Christmas dinner. Everyone also receives a present from Santa, with drinks like champagne and Glühwein along with mince pies and German Christmas Stollen (cake).”
The evening begins with Christmas cocktails at 6:30pm, hosted by the Captain, Hotel Manager, Cruise Director, Cruise Concierge, and the crew. This is followed by a Christmas dinner: a highlight of the day.
“For Christmas dinner, we usually offer a six-course meal, including smoked salmon, seafood, filet mignon, turkey, and vegetarian options, followed by Christmas dessert and petit fours. The Chef even makes the rounds in the restaurant to talk to every guest after the main service has been completed,” continued Anette.

Entertainment after dinner adds to the festive cheer, with local performers showcasing cultural traditions through music and dance. Guests can also participate in lively quizzes, treasure hunts, and other seasonal fun or relax while enjoying the festive atmosphere onboard.
Anette explained that working on Christmas Day comes with challenges and joys for the crew.
“The crew usually manages to have a little get-together on Christmas Eve. For us, it’s about ensuring our guests have a magical experience. We might have a quick toast with passengers, a call home to loved ones, and save the actual celebrations until we return home.”
