The Helix Bridge in Singapore is an unusual structure that serves as a pedestrian crossing
The Helix Bridge, officially dubbed The Helix, is an engineering marvel found in .
Previously known as the Double Helix Bridge, this £53.5million immense structure serves as a pedestrian crossing that links Marina Centre with Marina South found in the Marina Bay area.
The unusual structure does not follow a straight line but rather The Helix goes at a slight curve making it one of the most unique bridges of its time.
Other factors that set The Helix apart from the usual standard bridges we commonly see is that it boasts of a spiral structure which follows a helix shape over its own road.
The Helix Bridge has become one of Singapore’s major landmarks and is a true sight to behold, further hinting what future bridges may look like.

Most bridges are designed for vehicles to cross them with many bridges holding the title of being the longest or the highest in the world.
The Helix differs from many as it was designed for people to cross it and is the handiwork of international architects and engineers that even includes a Feng Shui criteria.
The bridge’s construction began back in 2007 and was completed three years later with the full opening on The Helix taking place on July 18 2010.
The Helix extends for a whopping 280 metres and is covered by canopies with a total of five bays.

Three of these bays are extended for 65 metres with the other two smaller bays measuring at 45 metres.
Construction of this pedestrianised crossing proceeded from North to South with workers on The Helix assembling its various pieces on site.
These assembled pieces for The Helix had been constructed specifically in order to be easily transported along the roads of Singapore.
The impressive bridge has a double-helix design which makes it more aesthetically pleasing while also reducing the amount of steel needed to build it.
The Helix’s grand and unusual design has won numerous awards including the World’s Best Transport Building, World’s Best Transport Building and even earning a spot in The Left Handed DNA Hall of Fame thanks to the bridge’s representation of the “left handed DNA-like” design.
One review on Tripadvisor read: “This is an interesting and very artistic piece of architecture in Singapore.”
