“Weekend Update” host Colin Jost gave his apologies in advance as he was tasked with using a “Black voice” to read never-before-seen, wild jokes written by co-host Michael Che in a return oftheirjokeswaptradition on Saturday.
And it got even more awkward for Jost as his wife Scarlett Johansson, who appeared in the show’s cold open earlier in the night, watched as he told Che’s quips involving her on live TV.
“Why?” asked Jost, who awkwardly smiled as a graphic of his wife appeared on the screen before he “dedicated” the joke to his “boo.”
The broadcast flipped to a shot of Johansson, who disapprovingly shook her head as she held a glass of water before the cameras turned to her watching her husband on a TV backstage.
“No, oh my gosh, she’s so genuinely worried,” said Jost as he watched her reaction.
He proceeded to drop a number of shocking jokes.
“Hey boo, y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday which means I’m about to get up out of there,” Jost quipped. “Shiz.”
Johansson looked somewhat confused and amused over the bit before Jost continued on.
“Nah, nah. I’m just playing. We just had a kid together and y’all ain’t see no pictures of him yet ’cause he Black as hell,” said Jost as he chuckled for several seconds.
“Shiz, shiz. I ain’t afraid of you mofos.”
The broadcast then went back to Johansson — who married the comedian in 2020 and shares a son with him — taking a sip of water as she shook her head.
Later in the segment, Jost turned to a not-safe-for-work joke Che wrote about Costco removing its roast beef sandwich from its menu.
“But I ain’t tripping, I be eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid,” said Jost as he chuckled and lowered his head into his hand.
“Oh my god,” Johansson appeared to mouth from backstage.
Jost continued, “Nah, nah. I’m just playing, baby. You know I don’t go down. Shiz. That’s gay as hell.”
