Graeme Souness believes that has ‘failed’ at holding down a place in a high-pressure team like .

Rashford is closer to leaving the Red Devils than he has ever been before, and the 27-year-old himself has opened the door to a January exit. United boss has left Rashford out of his last two matchday squads despite the forward being fit to play.

And Souness is unimpressed by what he feels is Rashford throwing the towel in. “He says he is ready for a new challenge and has proven he was not up for the first one thrown down to him of becoming a proper player at ,” the legend wrote for .

“For me it’s like he has put his hands up in the air and is saying he can’t deal with the expectation levels on his shoulders.”

Rashford hit 30 goals in all competitions in the 2022/23 season, but his numbers have tailed off dramatically since. Now, with Amorim using wing-backs and a pair of narrow No. 10s, he is at risk of being completely frozen out.

“He has failed at proving he is able to hold down a place in a team where you play cup finals every week,” Souness continued. “In ten seasons at United, he has scored over 20 goals on just three occasions. That’s proof that he is not up to taking on the challenge or the responsibility of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Moves to MLS or Saudi Arabia have both been touted, with few European clubs in a position to fork out for his eye-watering wages.

and Paris Saint-Germain have previously been credited with interest in Rashford, but neither of them are thought to be seriously considering a move this winter.

Souness is concerned that the England international may struggle to find his way back into a team of United’s calibre if he opts to rebuild his career away from one of Europe’s ‘big five’ divisions.

“In his head he is quietly accepting he has to go and play in a less challenging league,” said the Scotsman. “It will be interesting to see where he ends up because, as I said last week, I fear it will only be downhill for him from United.”
