Brits have until the end of this weekend to secure a one-time discount on their electricity bill. Uswitch is offering £10 of free electricity on Christmas Day, but only for those who have a smart meter.
This offer comes as a result of a partnership between Uswitch and the National Grid, with households needing to register by 22nd December. The initiative is part of a wider campaign to promote the benefits of smart meters and a scheme run by the National Grid to balance electricity demand.
One aspect of this programme allows households to earn money by reducing their energy use during peak times, such as turning off washing machines and dishwashers. Smart meters can precisely track how much energy people are using and when.
Several energy companies use this data to reward customers who cut back on usage during high-demand periods, particularly in winter. Another element of the scheme allows energy firms to provide free electricity on days when there is excess wind power that could otherwise go to waste.
The Christmas shutdown of factories, shops, and offices results in an excess of electricity on the grid, enabling energy companies to supply free power to customers. To take part, individuals need to download the Uswitch mobile app, connect their smart meter and activate push notifications to receive alerts when a session is about to start.
Uswitch is offering a festive financial boost with its Money Back scheme, promising all the electricity you use on Christmas Day for free, up to £10. The National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service incentivises households to cut down on power usage during peak times, easing pressure on the grid and supporting the UK’s shift towards renewable energy.
While payments might be lower than last year, Uswitch pledges to pass on the full amount from the National Grid, just as it did previously. Payment levels vary per Demand Session, but participants will be informed beforehand.
Uswitch explained: “Those taking part will be asked to reduce their electricity usage in a safe and manageable way, such as by switching off appliances not in use, and also adapting their routine, for example delaying cooking a meal or switching on the dishwasher.
“Households can use the app to monitor how much they have reduced their electricity usage compared to their typical usage. The app will calculate household earnings throughout the sessions. Once the scheme has ended, users will be paid in full. Users will also have the option to donate their earnings to charity.”
If you’re keen to get involved with the National Grid NESO Demand Flexibility Service, bear in mind that it’s a one-offer-only deal. To sign up for Money Back means opting out of any other similar schemes you’ve got running via apps or services because double-dipping could see you booted from the programme.
Uswitch.com energy sage Ben Gallizzi weighed in, highlighting: “Winter can be an expensive time for many households, so we hope that as many homes as possible can enjoy our little gift of free electricity on Christmas Day.”
He went on to underscore: “The Uswitch mobile app and the Money Back service are there to help households understand their energy usage and make the right choices for their home, as well as to cut back on energy consumption in a safe and manageable way.”
Gallizzi pointed out: “Based on the Money Back sessions, customers may find ways to change their energy habits for good and save on their energy bills all year round.
“Anyone with a smart meter display unit can take part in Money Back, no matter who their energy provider is. We’re also passing on the full payment for those who qualify.”
