Tyson Fury’s family you don’t know about – from mysterious mum to kingpin uncle

Tyson Fury, the heavyweight boxing champion, is gearing up for a much-anticipated rematch against Ukrainian titan Oleksandr Usyk.

Despite losing their previous bout, The Gypsy King is determined to reclaim the world titles and bring them back to England after his triumphant return in Saudi Arabia. His ever-supportive father, John Fury, along with his wife, Paris, and their seven children will be there to cheer him on.

However, Tyson has an especially large extended family, many of whom were not featured in the series ‘At Home With The Furys’, and they also play a significant role in his life. Although they will all be cheering him on from different parts of the world, many of them will be avoiding the limelight in Saudi on Saturday December 21.

Mysterious mum

One such person is his mother, Amber Fury, who has never attended any of her son’s 36 professional fights and remains largely absent from the public eye. Tyson himself believes his mother “does not care” about his boxing achievements.

Formerly married to Tyson’s dad, John, who isn’t one to shy away from the public eye, Amber takes a different approach to life as the parent of Tyson Fury.

Tyson once told the Telegraph: “I looked on Google the other day and there’s not one picture of my mother on the internet. That’s crazy isn’t it? She has never been to one of my boxing fights, amateur or professional and never been in the public eye at all.”

Tyson Fury, the Gypsy King, has always been grounded by his family’s humble values. He shared a touching insight into his mother’s perspective: “I don’t think it means anything to my mum. She doesn’t care if I’m world champion or not, as long as I’m healthy and happy. That is the only thing that means anything to her. You could give my mother that table full of £50 notes and diamonds and it wouldn’t change who she is, ever.”

The heavyweight champion from Morecambe also recounted an anecdote in his autobiography ‘Behind the Mask’, highlighting his mother’s obliviousness to his celebrity status. He wrote about a shopping trip where his fame was on full display: “I took her out shopping one time after the Wilder fight and I was being stopped for photographs and autographs everywhere I went in Manchester and she couldn’t understand it.”

“I had to explain to her that I was the heavyweight champion of the world and a lot of people had watched me and supported me. That was actually very special.”

Brotherly love

Fury’s family extends beyond the limelight with his brother Tommy Fury, known for his stint on Love Island and boxing career. Another half-brother, Roman Fury, has also stepped into the ring, inspired during lockdown as he told iFL TV in 2020: “When lockdown happened I had nothing else to do. I had no work on, as many people didn’t, and I had the opportunity to go and train. So I did it, got fit, lost a bit of weight and I just fell in love with it.”

Shane Fury, another sibling, is often spotted at Tyson’s major fights, preferring to keep a low profile compared to his brothers. Unlike them, Shane has not pursued boxing and lives a quieter life with his wife Helen.

Discussing his brother with iFL TV, he declared: “In my opinion, he [Fury] is the best heavyweight ever made. The size, stature of him, he shouldn’t be able to do what he can do but he’s a proper fighting man.”

Hugh Fury, on the other hand, has 19,600 followers on , although he isn’t a fighter himself. His posts reveal a passion for fitness, running, and home improvement projects. He is married to a woman named Tiffany.

Uncle Peter

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle, may be familiar to some as Tyson’s former coach, including during his rise to become the world heavyweight champion after defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. However, long before Tyson amassed his fortune and collection of supercars, Peter was already wealthy, though not through sports.

His name carries a notorious reputation in the north west of England, where he made a name for himself in the underworld. In an interview with BoxingScene, he once admitted: “I was wild when I was younger. I’d see someone with a nice pair of trainers on and want to have a fight with them.

“Then anyone who wanted protection would come to me because I was seen as a tough young fella. One thing led to another. I went from looking after people, to looking after other areas to looking after cities.”

Despite being a young man in his 20s, Peter rose to the top of a crime syndicate, overseeing an illegal amphetamine supply chain. He facilitated smuggling operations from Belgium into the north west, where the drugs were processed and distributed to buyers.

Before the law caught up with him, flashy Peter relished the luxuries his criminal activities afforded him, owning both a and a Porsche 911 with a personalised number plate. However, he maintained his traveller roots by continuing to live in caravans.

His high-speed lifestyle began to unravel when he was nabbed collecting a rucksack containing 10kg of speed in 1994. Instead of confessing, he attempted to deceive the courts by claiming his wealth stemmed from boxing, bare-knuckle fighting, and selling used cars.

Despite his protestations of innocence, he was sentenced to 10 years in jail for possession of amphetamine with intent to supply after evidence revealed he was conducting shady transactions using bank accounts in America, Spain, and Ireland.

He continued to operate his empire from behind bars and was later re-incarcerated in 2008 for money laundering and ordered to repay nearly £1 million in assets. Eventually, he managed to turn his life around in prison, achieving great success by training his nephew Tyson to become a world champion boxer.

In addition to his work with Tyson, John Fury has also trained his other son, Hughie, a professional heavyweight boxer, and has recently been guiding the career of Savannah Marshall.
