Seth Meyers clowned Republicans for “taking orders” from their “new leader” Elon Musk on Thursday after the billionaire Trump ally tanked a GOP government funding bill this week.
The “Late Night” host used Musk’s efforts to thwart the bill to call out a “myth” tied to Donald Trump’s “supposed populism”: the president-elect’s claims that he doesn’t need anyone’s money.
He turned to a supercut of Trump featuring clips of the president-elect blasting politicians for being “fully” controlled by lobbyists, donors and special interest groups.
“Sleepy Joe Biden works for big tech and big donors,” Trump told supporters in one clip from a 2020 campaign rally.
“I’m turning down millions of dollars for the campaign, millions. Everybody’s offering me money and I don’t want it so I’m turning down millions of dollars,” he declared in another clip from 2015.
Meyers hit back at Trump’s claims with a “rule” for his viewers.
“If the same guy who’s telling you he’s turning down millions is also doing informercials for his own bibles, take it with a grain of salt,” Meyers said.
He later continued, “Also may I remind you, you were the one, not Joe Biden, who had a billionaire tech mogul jumping around with you on stage like a golden retriever who snuck into a bounce house.”
