The crimes are believed to have happened between 2011 and 2020, with detectives listing a total of 92 rapes committed by 72 men, 51 of whom have been identified aged between 26 and 73.
Pelicot is said to have sedated his wife with anti-anxiety drugs and sleeping pills before inviting “sex partners” on an online forum called “without her knowing”.
Most of the 50 men all come from towns and villages in a 50km (30 mile) radius of the Pelicots’ home village of Mazan.
Mrs Pelicot had no idea of the assaults until she attended a police station in 2020 following her husbands arrest in the supermarket.
In an usual but widely-acclaimed move, Mrs Pelicot waived her right to anonymity to allow the case to be held in public and to “shine a light” for other victims.
