Sydney Sweeney has been fending off critics all year.
Back in April, Hollywood’s new ‘it girl’ found herself the subject of some very unkind remarks when a veteran Hollywood producer declared she’s “not pretty” and “can’t act.”
Then in an October interview with Glamour magazine, Sweeney opened up about the harassment she faces from the paparazzi. In the same conversation, Sweeney was forced to shut down rumours that her fiance, Jonathan Davino, pays for everything.
“I’m a very successful, independent woman who’s worked really hard,” she told Glamour. “I’ve accomplished and bought everything myself, and I provide for myself and my family.”
Now, just days before Christmas, the Anyone But You star, 27, has been flooded by harsh comments again after pictures of her catching some sun in a bikini outside her $13 million waterfront Florida mansion hit the internet.
But haters were quick to criticize her looks on social media. “Let’s be real here, that body is not that incredible, just saying…,” one person blasted. “She knocked up? Stung by a nest of wasps? Dive into a swimming pool full of donuts and chips? Good grief man!” another disgruntled user added.
“Without artifice (makeup, filter and photoshop), she is really ugly,” a third commenter swiped.
“She is actually not taking good care of herself,” a fourth snarky comment read. “Probably eating bad and when she eats, it’s fast food.”
Sweeney added no further commentary, but her celebrity pals cheered her on for standing up for herself.
“The thing is these people would never say it in person. Too scared. But if they ever did? Best believe it’s hands,” her Madame Web co-star Isabela Merced remarked.
Riverdale star Lili Reinhart said, “It’s always wild to see people publicly out-themselves as pieces of s*** with comments like that. You look incredible and your dedication to your project is very inspiring.”
“You’re such a badass. This movie is gonna be 🔥,” said Sweeney’s Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell added.
Rachel Brosnahan weighed in with a string of fire emojis, while pop star Kesha called Sweeney a “strong baddie.”
Sweeney’s fans also rallied behind the Euphoria star.
“Those comments are disgusting,” one person commented. “I wish people could shut their mouths (you’re) gorgeous.”
“What’s wrong with people??” a second added. “Leaving comments and hiding behind their phones … gross behaviour.”
“I kind of just have to take (it) day by day and just keep being myself,” she said. “Of course it’s not natural. I’m just trying to figure out how to deal with all of it.”
“I just can’t allow myself to have a reaction. I don’t know how to explain it — I’m still trying to figure it out myself,” she said.
