A cruise ship expert has shared the two occasions that all passengers should be aware of and pack for.

In a video shared to, Tim who goes by cruiseshiptipsandchat, said that frequently expect an “evening casual” to “black tie” for those choosing to dine in the restaurants.

For men, evening casual means long trousers and a collared or polo shirt, and for women they should expect to be wearing a cocktail dress or something similar.

One or two nights of your cruise may be a black tie event. This means the full deal, with suits and bowties expected for men and evening gown or floor length dresses for women.

Of course, not all cruises will have these dress codes in place so make sure you do some research before you embark on your travels.

How would you feel about being told what to wear on holiday? Cruise ship dress codes are a controversial topic!

Even if your cruise does have these codes in place, Tim says there are places on the ship where these won’t apply for dinner such as the buffet.

If a more relaxed dining experience is what you’re after, try that instead of one of the restaurants.

However if you are heading to the buffet there’s still some etiquette you need to be aware of.

The founder of , James Cole said: “Although you may be hungry and eager to head to the buffet, remember that your fellow passengers are likely feeling the same way, and your wants and needs don’t supersede theirs.

“Be patient and wait for your turn and if you really can’t wait to tuck into your food then make sure to have a snack in-between meal times.”

Another buffet faux pas is eating when still in the queue. Wait till you’re in your seat and avoid eating when in line.
