The wait is almost over for Outnumbered fans to catch up with The Brockman family after almost a decade off-screens. The Christmas special will follow Pete and Sue Brockman in their downsized home now that their children have grown up.
On Wednesday’s instalment of Morning Live, viewers were treated to a first look at what’s to come in the upcoming special, with one character making a big decision.
The clip shows a grown-up Karen (played by Ramona Marquez) revealing that she’s thinking about changing her name. She tells her parents: “Karen is the archetypal name for an entitled middle-aged woman.”
Replying, her dad Pete (Hugh Dennis) says: “I’m sorry, we’d meant to teleport into the future to check on that when we christened you.”
Taking her daughter seriously, Sue (Claire Skinner) questions what Karen is thinking about changing her name to. Cutting in, Pete replied: “Morticia is nice.”
Outnumbered Christmas special sees huge change for beloved character Karen
In another scene, it showed Pete, Karen and one of their sons Ben (Daniel Roche) decorating the Christmas tree. However, the decorations weren’t completely traditional.
As Pete was clearly unimpressed with their unusual choice for the star at the top, Karen and Ben asked why. The dad replied: “I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem right.”
Viewers then got to see the family had opted to put a miniature figure of footballer at the top of the tree.
Once the small first look was over, host Helen Skelton and Rav Wilding couldn’t contain their excitement.
The Brockmans are back together once again
Rav joked: “A great top for a Christmas tree!” Helen added: “We saw The Brockmans together on The One Show, I think the whole nation went, ‘Is that what they look like now, those kids?'”
Agreeing, Rav said the trio had now grown up. Helen added: “It happens in a blink of an eye!”
Outnumbered initially aired back in 2007 and ran for five series until 2014. Although there was a Christmas special in 2016, fans have been eager for another return.
This year, viewers will see Sue and Pete gather their kids and now grandchildren at their home for a traditional Christmas. However, things don’t go as planned as fate, neighbours, hyenas and bus replacement services all get in their way.
The festive special will air on the BBC on Boxing Day
Speaking about the upcoming special, Hugh Dennis says: “I can’t wait for the Brockmans to be back together again. Pete and Sue have downsized, the children are no longer children, but I’m sure family life will prove to be just as chaotic as ever.”
Claire Skinner added: “I’m really looking forward to being reunited with my TV family. Working on this wonderful comedy doesn’t feel like work and is one of the greatest joys for us all.”
The Outnumbered Christmas special will air on One and iPlayer on Thursday 26th December at 9:40pm.
