B.C. teacher suspended for not allowing student to use bathroom

Failing to allow the student to use the bathroom embarrassed the student, who then cried, ruling says

An unnamed B.C. teacher has been suspended for five days for not allowing a Grade 8 student to leave class to use the bathroom.

“When Student A asked for permission to use the bathroom the teacher denied the request, even though Student A explained the reason why they needed to use the bathroom,” the ruling stated.

“Failing to allow Student A to use the bathroom as requested resulted in a very embarrassing situation for Student A which caused Student A to cry.”

The teacher resigned from the school after being reported by the principal.

The commissioner wrote that two years before the July 2023 incident the teacher had been given a letter of expectation in which the teacher was reminded “there is no place for sarcasm, belittlement or shame in the learning and work environment at the school.”

In the same letter the teacher was also told that when a student asks to go to the bathroom they must be permitted to do so.

The commissioner and teacher agreed that they be suspended from teaching for five days and that they complete the Creating a Positive Learning Environment court at the Justice Institute of B.C.
