Keeping a fuel can in your car means you can be prepared for a breakdown and be ready to collect gas from a nearby station.

Jerry cans can save you in a breakdown
Experts at Motor Match, in line with advice from motoring authorities like the RAC and AA, have outlined the essential items every motorist should carry to stay safe and avoid costly breakdowns.
As well as a fuel can, experts recommend keeping an ice scraper in the car to make sure you’re driving safely.
“Driving with an icy windscreen is dangerous and illegal,” says a Motor Match spokesperson. “Failing to clear your view could result in a £1,000 fine and three penalty points.”
A phone charger and/or fully charged power bank with cords is also important to keep so that if you’re stranded in traffic, or an accident, you can make sure you can reach people.

Breakdowns don’t have to be stressful
Cold weather can also make a breakdown more dangerous, as temperatures can drop quickly. Therefore it’s important to keep warm clothing like thermals, beanies, gloves and blankets in the car in case you get stuck somewhere at night or in the snow.
Flat batteries are a leading cause of breakdowns in cold weather, so jumper leads are also an essential part of a winter motorist survival kit.
“Jump leads are an affordable and effective way to get back on the road quickly, especially if you’re far from help,” said the expert.
If you end up stranded in the dark it’s important to make sure you’re visible to other drivers so a hi-vis jacket should also be in your kit.
In order to prepare for accidents or emergencies it’s wise to have a first aid kit in the car.
“The AA recommends having a kit with sterile wipes, plasters and bandages to treat injuries in case of a collision,” Motor Match advises. “Even minor incidents can require immediate attention until professional help arrives.”
Icy conditions can make accidents more likely, and even if you are not involved in a crash you may end up in traffic if a fender bender occurs ahead of you, therefore it’s important to keep food and water in the car.
“Keeping snacks and water in your car means you’re prepared for long waits in queues or if you become stranded,” Motor Match advises. “The AA suggests high-energy snacks and bottled water to stay hydrated and fuelled.”
