“Focusing largely on engagement and wedding jewelry, we work both in-person and remotely with our clients, offering environmentally and socially responsible materials sourced with fair-trade practices,” says lead designer Kathleen Kerr.

We caught up with Kerr to learn more:
A: Consumer demand for ‘ethical’ and eco-conscious jewelry has really blossomed in recent years, however it can be difficult to tell which companies are ‘greenwashing’ and simply paying lip service to these important issues. At FTJCo, we’ve always prided ourselves on our transparent approach to sourcing, ever since we became the first retailer to offer Certified Fairtrade, and, subsequently, Fairmined gold in North America.
From there we’ve focused on the origins of our diamonds and gems using evidence-based supply chains. We’ve proudly earned many certifications since our founding, with the goal of making a positive impact on our world. Some of our certifications include: B Corp, Responsible Jewellery Council, Ontario Living Wage Network, and Rainbow Registered. FTJCo is also employee-owned. We want our clients to be confident in and proud of the jewelry they cherish, not just because it looks beautiful, but also because of the care and thoughtfulness that went into making it at every step of the process.
Q: Who is the target customer?
A: We like to make jewelry for all humans. However, our bread and butter are engagement rings and wedding bands. Therefore, our demographic tends to skew to those in their 20s to 40s.
Q: Is there a ‘hero’ design?
A: Our most popular engagement ring design of the moment is the Pietra Hidden Halo Ring. It’s a minimalist and timeless design that works with virtually every cut of gem. It really celebrates the centre stone and features a delicate ‘hidden’ diamond pavé embellishment on the side of the setting to make it extra special. Another one of our hero designs are our Stella Hoops, which are understated, but just gorgeous, again featuring clean lines and sparkling gems. These versatile earrings would make for a stunning and very special holiday gift.
Q: What is the price range?
A: The sky’s the limit, as we are able to source gems of various varieties and sizes, but our pricing for 18-karat gold pieces can range from $595 for a simple two-millimetre wedding band, up to $5,000 to $10,000 for a custom multi-stone ring. Our Parliament collection features affordable 14-karat gold and silver jewelry for everyday wear, and ranges in price from $39 to $899.
