Former Gardeners’ World presenter has revealed how he eats the same two-ingredient meal for lunch every day.

In a recent chat with the Times, the much-loved horticulturist gave an insight into his daily routine, explaining how he ventures down to his garden for apples to have alongside a pork pie every lunch time.

While the popular broadcaster likes to make full use of his garden at lunch time, Alan explained he had a much simpler breakfast routine.

He said: “Breakfast is Shreddies. Bit of honey, bit of fruit. Classic FM on the radio; no news, no telly. Shave and shower, finishing off with a blast of cold water.”

While he likes to keep his breakfast and lunch routines as simple as possible, the 75-year-old was keen to show his disapproval at one growingly popular breakfast choice.

He said: “It seems there is a great movement towards smashed avocado on sourdough bread. I can’t think of anything more insipid to force down my neck at the crack of dawn.”

But, it was more than just the unique taste of the dish that the gardening expert was dismissive of, he was also keen to point out the detrimental impact that the demand for the dish causes.

“I cannot reconcile myself to eating avocados and contributing to the enormous carbon footprint involved in shipping them across the ocean to my breakfast table, not to mention the wholesale destruction of the rainforest to create such plantations,” he explained.

Alan was also keen to express his love for his wife Alison, as the pair are soon to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

He said: “Alison and I have been married for almost 50 years now and I keep getting asked about the secret. The usual things, I suppose: similar values, being able to laugh at the same things.

“I also married someone who is very tolerant of how much I talk about gardening.” he told the Times.

You can watch the horticulturist speak to celebrity guests as they join him at his Manor Farm, Hampshire every Sunday at 9.30am on his ITV1 show Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.
