Shirley Kemp spills George Michael’s wild Christmas tradition with Wham! bandmates

bandmates have lifted the lid on his cheeky Christmas antics, revealing that the late superstar used to don wigs and go carolling incognito.

Andrew Ridgeley, Pepsi Demacque-Crockett, and Shirlie Kemp shared the festive confession during a lively chat on ’s , revealing the pop icon’s sneaky holiday hobby.

Pepsi shared: “We used to arrive at his place, he has all these false wigs…”, setting the stage for an unconventional holiday tradition. Shirlie humorously chimed in, “Sounds odd now!”

The group’s carolling setup was far from ordinary. Pepsi added: “We had like a beatbox and a little tin to collect the money. We used to arrive at someone’s door.

“There would be Andrew and Shirley, a whole bunch of us singing the carols. Then all of a sudden the penny would drop and they would realise it was George Michael.”

Andrew Ridgeley added a lighthearted confession about their carolling repertoire. “They’d only ever get the first verse and chorus because that’s all we knew,” he admitted.

“They used to put a few pennys in the tin, then we’d get on the bus and go to the pub and have a drink and then we’d do it again. Then they’d have to run if we wanted anymore,” Shirlie added.

In a recent documentary titled Wham!: Last Christmas Unwrapped, the 80s legends explained why George wrote their hit song ‘Last Christmas.’

Speaking to the camera, Shirlie said: “Christmas was bigger than him, so he could disguise himself in Christmas. That was one of the reasons he loved that time of year, and why he liked to go carol singing. Imagine if everyone had iPhones back then. Our Christmas Eves were the best.”

During an interview on Heart Breakfast, Andrew went on to reveal how the song came about, telling : “We were killing time at his mum and dad’s place and Yog [George] just sort of got up in a flash and he had a little four-track recording studio in those days.

“He came back down about an hour later or so and grabbed me excitedly and dragged me upstairs and says, ‘Andy, you’ve got to hear this’, and it was instantly recognisable as a song of quite some genius.”

Speaking about this momentous occasion, Andrew said: “Everyone wanted that No1 status, and 2023 was that year. That Wham! and ‘Last Christmas’ has reached so far, and touched so deeply so many people, is remarkable. It makes me feel very grateful and thankful for that which Wham! meant to people.”

Unfortunately, George was not here to see this exciting moment, with the talented songwriter passing away on Christmas Day, 2016, at the age of 53.
