Surrey, Anmore and Port Moody flooding victims eligible for financial help

Residents and businesses in Surrey, Port Moody and Anmore have been added to the list of those eligible to apply for disaster financial assistance.

More flooding victims are now eligible for financial help after the province expanded its disaster support fund.

Residents and businesses in Surrey, Port Moody and Anmore have been added to the list of those eligible to apply for disaster financial assistance (DFA) after an atmospheric river hammered the region with heavy rain in October.

The first round of financial assistance was announced in late November, with flood-impacted residents and businesses in the cities of Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, North Van, West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and the Squamish First Nation among those first eligible.

The DFA is meant to “compensate for sudden, unexpected and uninsurable losses that are essential.” Those include building repairs to a home, replacement of essential personal items, cleanup and debris removal. Losses that could have been insured and where insurance was readily available aren’t eligible.

The B.C. DFA program is available to both homeowners and renters, business owners, farmers, corporation-owned properties and charitable organizations.

In recent years, the program has been expanded to allow for claims of up to $400,000, up from the previous $300,000 limit. Businesses earning up to $2 million annually are now also eligible, as well as corporation-owned homes as long as the home is a primary residence.

Applications must be submitted within 90 days of the disaster being declared an eligible event. The deadline for the October 2024 flooding is Feb. 23, 2025.
