Vancouver city council has approved updates to the two-year-old Broadway plan, allowing for increased density along the new subway line.
The updates voted in this week will increase the number and size of highrises in many of the 500 blocks covered by the plan, which dictates how neighbourhoods could change along the length of the busy transit corridor.
The original plan was approved in June 2022 by Vancouver’s previous council and had already allowed for added density in the form of 30,000 additional homes and 42,000 jobs.
Thursday’s amendments are expected to create additional capacity for 38 per cent more homes. The changes largely come in response to provincial legislation that mandates minimum densities near transit stations.
