The new M.H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences has opened at Vancouver Coastal Health.
B.C. has a global reputation for its Vancouver Prostate Centre to treat cancer. Now the city is set once again to become a leader in treating urologic diseases.
The M.H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences has opened at the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute where top experts in the field will work on diagnosing, treating and preventing urologic diseases, according to a joint statement this week from VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation.
The institute was named after Mohseni after he donated $20 million to VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation urologic sciences campaign, which raised $65 million in less than two years for the new institute.
Urologic diseases affect the urinary tract, kidneys, bladder, prostate and reproductive organs. In Canada, the health care costs of urologic diseases exceed $20 billion annually, according to the news release.
The M.H. Mohseni Institute of Urologic Sciences will be home to six specialized centres, each dedicated to advancing research and clinical care in its specific area of focus:
• Vancouver Prostate Centre
• Centre for Kidney Stones and Minimally Invasive Surgery
• Centre for Functional Urology and Reconstructive Surgery
• Centre for Kidney Transplantation and Immunology
• Reproductive and Sexual Medicine Centre
• Centre for Adolescent and Transitional Urology
Mohseni, who immigrated to Canada in 1981, is a philanthropist and an engineer. He transformed ECS Electrical Cable Supply into a global company headquartered in Richmond.
