Jim Carrey’s reasons for doing yet another “Sonic” movie are anything but a spin.
On Tuesday, the comedian was asked by The Associated Press at the London premiere of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” why he decided to reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in the franchise.
In response, the “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” star got refreshingly honest.
“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly. Yeah,” Carrey admitted with a smile.
The AP’s question was broached due to a statement the “Truman Show” star made to Access Hollywood in 2022 while he was promoting “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.”
At the time, Carrey told the outlet that he was considering retiring from acting.
“I’m being fairly serious,” he said about retiring at the time. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I’m taking a break.”
He went on to explain that he felt perfectly content with his “quiet life” painting political cartoons, which often went viral during President-elect Donald Trump’s previous term.
“I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough,” Carrey added to Access Hollywood. “I’ve done enough. I am enough.”

When the AP asked Carrey on Tuesday if the angels’ gold-inked script was in fact, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Carrey chuckled, and said, “That might have been hyperbole.”
As to what the “Dumb and Dumber” star bought that would justify him doing yet another crash-grab movie is unknown, but here’s hoping he didn’t max out his credit cards buying a bunch of floating gold rings.
